Smoke-free municipality

Roeser - Smoke-free municipality

Faced with the alarming consequences of smoking on public health, the environment and Luxembourg society, the municipality of Roeser is taking a resolute stance against the worrying trend of a steady increase in the number of daily smokers since 2019.

Current statistics show that a quarter (28%) of Luxembourg residents over the age of 16 are currently smokers. This situation is all the more worrying among young people, with smoking rates reaching 34% among 16-24 year-olds and 38% among 25-34 year-olds.

To counter this alarming trend and reaffirm its commitment to creating a healthy environment that puts the well-being of all citizens at the heart of its concerns, the municipality of Roeser recently joined the ‘Generation Without Tobacco’ movement.

Under the banner of a vision for a future without tobacco, the municipality of Roeser and the association Fondation Cancer Luxembourg have joined forces in a partnership with the ambitious aim of freeing the local environment from the harmful effects of smoking and seeing the emergence, by 2040, of the first Luxembourg generation to have grown up without tobacco. As part of this commitment, at the beginning of February the municipality was awarded the Commune sans tabac label in the bronze category. This label enables the municipality to make its commitment visible and to set an example for others to follow.

The label is associated with concrete measures to be implemented by the local authority to protect its residents from passive smoking and ensure a healthy environment, with a particular focus on protecting children and young people. Over the coming weeks and months, the municipality of Roeser will be launching a number of initiatives, including the creation of smoke-free zones, awareness-raising campaigns aimed at residents, the organisation of events dedicated to promoting a smoke-free lifestyle, and the rigorous extension of the smoke-free policy to public spaces.
